Dear Parents/ Guardians,
Welcome to Year 3 & 4. My name is Mr. Roberts and I will be teaching your children this academic year. I do hope you have all had a wonderful summer holiday, and have managed to spend some quality family time together. We’ve had some wonderful weather, and with many restrictions having been lifted I hope you have been able to enjoy some of the aspects of life that we have not been able to enjoy for so long.
In Year 3 & 4, we are very fortunate to have the wonderful Miss Hughes and Miss McDermott, supporting the children in class. We are all very much looking forward to welcoming the children back and supporting them in the next phase of their learning journey.
The following overview will give you a brief idea as to what’s going on during the Autumn term. Our theme “Wonderland”, for this term is based on the book ‘Alice in Wonderland’’, written by the magnificent author, Lewis Carroll.
This term, Year 3 & 4 will learn to develop an inquisitive and curious mind-set through exploring the sub-themes of Good versus Evil! We will use the story of ‘Kassim and the Greedy Dragon’ to produce some exciting pieces of creative writing based on the works of Pie Corbett. We will be covering different types of writing styles, such as newspaper reports, diary entries, instructions and persuasive advertisements. As authors, they will create fictional pieces of writing by using their imagination to write exciting stories and poems. As scientists, they will further develop their understanding of the human body, whilst exploring different sources of light.
In turn, as geographers, they will look to consolidate their understanding of maps and atlases, on their local area. As mathematicians, they will be focusing on place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication & division, measurement, collecting and recording data and much more. Finally, in art the children will learn about different illustrators and local Welsh artists to help develop their creative skills.
Reading: Your child’s reading book will be changed weekly, however reading takes place regularly throughout the week during our guided reading sessions. Therefore, please ensure your child brings their book bag into school every day. For those who wish to buy a new reading book bag, a mere 50p is all that’s required. The benefits of reading to or listening to your child read regularly are endless, and will go a long way in having a positive impact upon your child for the rest of their lives.
PE is on a Monday afternoon this term and Forest School with Mrs Davies will take place every Tuesday morning. The pupils should be in their ‘active school uniform’ for these activities and not their own clothes. For the outside please make sure that they have a waterproof coat and some wellies if they have them. The class will be split into 2 groups and the children will alternate every other week.
